St. Benedict had the best player, though Holy Trinity‘s collective talent proved too great an obstacle.

The host Tigers rode a balanced attack of four double-figure scorers to overcome a standout individual game by St. Benedict star senior Jon Patino to outlast the Bengals 63-47 in capturing their own Class 2A regional Friday night.

Winning a regional for the first time in three years, Holy Trinity (14-15) advances to play Northridge Prep in the Luther North Sectional Tuesday.

Behind the brilliant all-around game of Patino (23 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals), the Bengals used a 15-4 run to lead 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Holy Trinity senior guards Carlos Aguirre (17 points) and Cavell Williams (13 points) combined for 10 points in fueling an 18-6 advantage for a 31-23 lead at the break.

“Patino’s a great player,” Williams said. “I’ve been playing against him for four years. Our coaches just told us we had to pressure them and try and take Patino out of the game.”

Junior forward Robert Greer scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half. He also hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Greer scored his team’s final six points of the third quarter to push his team’s lead to 52-39 after three quarters. St. Benedict (9-17) never cut the deficit within single digits in the fourth quarter.

Senior forward Robert Adams added 13 points for the Tigers.

Junior guard Zack Johnson contributed eight points for the Bengals.
