No. 10 Lake Forest was far from effective offensively Saturday night, but the Scouts turned in their best defensive effort of the season in defeating host Highland Park 43-26.
Highland Park managed only three field goals in the first half and finished 7-for-39 from the floor. Lake Forest (18-3) scored the first seven points of the game and led 22-9 at halftime.
A day after becoming his school’s all-time leading scorer, Matt Vogrich scored seven of his game-high 13 points in the first quarter and also grabbed nine rebounds.
“I think our legs were a little tired so a lot of our shots were short,” Vogrich said. “Everybody on our team shot poorly from the three-point line, but we found a way to win. If they only score 26 points, you can score more than that, usually.”
After making only 9-of-26 shots in the first half, Lake Forest became more deliberate in the second half and sank 8-of-18 attempts. The Scouts led by as many as 19 and the Giants (4-17) never got closer than 11.
Tommy Rees had nine points for Lake Forest. Cole Stern and Marin Kukoc led Highland Park with five points each.
