In a show of solidarity before Friday's game, players and coaches from North Lawndale and Gary Lew Wallace met at center court and locked arms for one minute.
After that, Lew Wallace -- playing without 6-6 Damion McGee -- was no match for the Phoenix (19-4) as No. 4 North Lawndale triumphed 95-61.
The game was almost a wrap by halftime as point guard Terry Johnson’s breakaway dunk put the home team up 42-16. North Lawndale’s lead ballooned to 43 points in the second half.
Jonathan Taylor led all scorers with 21 points, Johnson had 18 points for North Lawndale and Jonathan Mills added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
“This has turned into a great rivalry. It was also Senior Night and you could see Jonathan Taylor was fired up coming from Lew Wallace [as a transfer],” said North Lawndale coach Lewis Thorpe. “You could see they were a little out of sync without one of their big [players].”
Shawn Tarver led Lew Wallace (9-5) with 11 points.
“They have a great team,” said Lew Wallace coach Renaldo Thomas. “We are a little banged up right now and we never could get anything going.”
