In his first season at Orr after leading Englewood to the Class 2A sectionals last year, coach Lew Adams can’t contain his enthusiasm when speaking about the arrival of sophomore forward Mycheal Henry.
‘‘He was a gift,’’ Adams said. ‘‘He kind of fell into our arms.’’
Henry is an athletic, slashing player who transferred from Morgan Park. To help Henry’s adjustment to a new school and surroundings, Adams has brought him along slowly. Henry is playing only the second half of Orr’s varsity games.
Even in limited varsity minutes, Henry is revealing an advanced skill level and ability to compete against the elite of the Public League. He made three spectacular blocks against Young last week, two on Chris Colvin and another on Anthony Johnson.
Against North Lawndale last week, Henry scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot. He has the quickness to get to the basket but also has a sharp mid-range game.
Playing against better competition only has accelerated Henry’s learning curve.
‘‘He’s really a good kid who has a great attitude, and he’s a hard worker,’’ Adams said. ‘‘He’s 6-5 and can get to the basket. He’s quick, strong and willing to learn.
‘‘The only thing he has to really work on is his decision-making. He’s so young, he’s still learning and doesn’t really know the game. Once he gets that down, he’ll be fine.’’
Quiet but determined, Henry is eager to show off his talent. But he admitted playing against top competition has been a trial by fire.
‘‘I knew once I got to the varsity I had to step my game up and get stronger,’’ he said.
