Hyde Park coach Donnie Kirksey said playing without a clock may have been a blessing in disguise as the No. 13 Thunderbirds defeated Dunbar 64-49 Wednesday in the Red-Central.

With 4:58 remaining in the second quarter, the clock stopped working. After several futile attempts to fix the problem -- including bringing in a new clock -- Hyde Park officials decided just to play and keep track of the scoring at the scorer's table.

The Thunderbirds grabbed a 30-20 lead at halftime then blew the game open in the third quarter. Malcolm Griffin triggered a 12-0 run, scoring four points, grabbing four rebounds and handing out four assists as the home team opened a 42-20 lead.

Hyde Park outscored the Mightymen 19-5 as they built a 49-25 lead at the end of three quarters.

With representatives of several schools on hand (including those from Wichita State, Northern Iowa and Central Florida), Griffin didn’t disappoint them as he scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out seven assists.

Fabian Harris scored 16 points and Anthony Dixon scored 12 points for Hyde Park (13-3, 4-1), while Jerome Moore scored six points with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Jacoby Fields led the Mightymen with 14 points and Damante Liddle added 10 points.

“It was very unfortunate about the clock; we had people in yesterday to fix it. It appears to be the transmitter," said Kirksey. “But we made the best out of the situation and it really helped us to concentrate and focus just on the game. This is the type of team effort that I’m looking for.

"Malcolm played a well-rounded game, but I want to single out Martell Jackson who does all the little things and plays strong defense on their guards.”
