Mitch Hopfinger and No. 20 Lake Forest rallied to stun crosstown rival Lake Forest Academy 44-43 Tuesday in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Lake Forest (12-3) hit just two of the first 23 shots as it fell behind 25-12 early in the third quarter. Hopfinger and Matt Vogrich (16 points) brought the Scouts back.
"We got off to a slow start," said Hopfinger, who scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half.
"We did a good job of fighting back and pressuring the ball."
Trailing 38-29 with 7:01 to play, Lake Forest scored 13 unanswered points to take 42-38 lead with 1:53 left.
Lake Forest Academy (7-4) closed to 44-42 and had David Smith at the line with two shots and 5.1 seconds left. But Smith hit just one free throw.
After a Lake Forest missed free throw, the Caxys had a final chance, but Markus Rodgers' halfcourt shot was off target.
Lake Forest Academy, which was 7-of-19 from the line, was led by Angus Brandt, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Remy Ndiaye added 10 points for the Caxys.
