Derek Needham took control of the game early and led No. 16 De La Salle to a 65-45 victory Friday night over host Providence in a Catholic League South contest.
Needham drained a couple of threes and assisted on another basket in the first three minutes of the game to stake the Meteors (10-3, 1-0) to a 10-1 lead.
"He opened up the floor and got everyone involved," Meteors coach Tom White said of Needham. "The game just flowed from there."
Providence (6-10, 1-3) managed to tie the game at 13 on a three-pointer by J. R. Glick. But Andre Henley and Needham combined for eight points in an 11-3 run that upped the lead to 24-16 with 5:41 left in the first half and the Meteors cruised from that point.
Needham finished with 10 points and Tony Torrence netted 12. Rich Fisher came off the bench to score 14 for the Meteors.
Kevin McNally led Providence with 19 points.
