Kareem Amedu scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as No. 15 Neuqua Valley pounded Plainfield Central 71-48 in a nonconference matchup Wednesday night in Plainfield.

Amedu, a 6-5 junior center, made 9-of-10 from the field and didn't play in the fourth quarter.

"Kareem was so active around the rim," Neuqua Valley coach Todd Sutton said. "He was just outstanding tonight."

Neuqua Valley (13-1) jumped out to leads of 7-0, 11-2 after one quarter and 19-4 with 5:01 to play in the first half. The Wildcats (8-4) never got closer than 21-10. Amedu then had eight points in a 13-2 spurt toward the end of the second quarter that helped Neuqua Valley to a 34-16 halftime lead.

"Our offense was a little shaky to start," Sutton said. "But our defense was right there in the first quarter and on. I thought our defensive rebounding in the first half was tremendous."

Senior forward Derek Raridon had 17 points and junior forward Dewayne Evans came off the bench to contribute 10 points and eight boards for Neuqua Valley.

Plainfield Central was led by sophomore guard Derek Marks with 12 points, and senior forward Jeff Allen finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

"We had some success over the break and we got a false sense of comfort," said Central coach Josh Virostko, whose team defeated previously unbeaten Providence-St. Mel 62-55 to win the title at Lemont on Dec. 30. "We came out playing like that and Neuqua Valley was able to expose it."
