Morton made West Suburban Gold history Friday when it became the first ever conference team to win at Proviso East in consecutive seasons.
The Mustangs overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to beat the Pirates 62-55 in Maywood.
It's always big to win here, said Luke Scarlatta, who scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter.
The Pirates (4-4, 2-1) took a 46-36 lead by outscoring Morton 21-10 in the third quarter. Brent Little scored seven of his 18 points in the quarter.
But Roberto Custudio sank two free throws with 3:35 to play to tie the game at 48.
We have a group of seniors and they didnt panic, Morton coach Tony Martinucci said. They knew what they had to do to get back in the game and they did it.
Morton took a 56-54 lead on a layup by Raul Guzman (12 points) with a 1:42 remaining. Guzman then scored off a steal to give the Mustangs (7-1, 4-0) a four-point lead they never relinquished.
I just wanted to get rebounds and play good defense, Guzman said. I just said, If I got my points, I got my points.
Joe Belcaster scored five of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for Morton.
William Crowder added 18 points for Proviso East.
