It might have been a North Suburban Lake game, but it was more like a Big Ten preview as Brandon Paul and Warren outlasted Matt Vogrich and Lake Forest 70-62 in overtime Tuesday in Lake Forest.
"It will be good matchup again next year," said Paul, who is headed to Illinois next year and finished with 31 points.
"We had a big lead tonight, but we got a little too comfortable and let them back in. We played hard in the end and did a good job in overtime."
Vogrich, who will be at Michigan next year, kept Lake Forest (3-2, 1-1) close in the first half. Vogrich scored 18 of the. Scouts, first 20 points and had an assist on the other two points.
"We came out a bit passive and didn't run our offense well," said Vogrich, who finished with 39 points and nine rebounds.
"We came back real nice, though."
Trailing 13-12 early in the second quarter, the Blue Devils scored 10 unanswered points as Paul began and ended the spurt with 3-point baskets.
Leading 31-22 at the half, Warren scored the first 7 points of the third quarter to lead 38-22. Warren led 40-24 when the Scouts made their move.
Behind Vogrich, the Scouts rallied to take a 51-50 lead on Vogrich's three-point play with 3:58 to play.
A 3-pointer by Paul and a basket by Lake Forest's Matt Williams had the game tied at 53 with 2:12 to play. The teams played to a tie at 57 at the end of regulation. Vogrich had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but his jumper was a bit long.
In overtime, Warren scored the first six points and Lake Forest never got closer than four the rest of the way. Warren's James Poliquin added 13 points, while Lake Forest's Mitch Hopfinger had nine.
