Opening the season last week against Plainfield North at Lemont's Thanksgiving Tournament, Sandburg took a commanding 19-1 lead after one quarter only to lose 63-56.

Monday night at Lemont, the Eagles jumped out to another early lead but weren't about to let the Indians back into the game.

Outscoring host Lemont 19-6 in the second quarter, Sandburg pulled away for good in winning 65-42.

"(Plainfield North) was our first game, and the first time we were all playing together," Sandburg forward Stavros Demogerontas said. "That was our story last year; play well early and then fall apart. Now we're just trying to fix it. We just try not to let stuff get into our heads."

Demogerontas led the Eagles with 15 points. Mitch Thompson contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, and Douglass Bennett gave Sandburg (2-1) a lift off the bench with nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Bennett, a 6-foot-7 junior, joined the team just this year and was playing in only his third game.

Alex Nelson (4 rebounds) and Dominic Piazza scored eight points apiece for Lemont (0-3). Mike Dvorak chipped in seven points.

Lemont scored first Monday, but Thompson answered for the Eagles with a layup. Fouled on the play, Thompson went to the line and drilled the free throw to give Sandburg the lead - an advantage they held the rest of the game.

Holding a 19-12 lead after one period, Sandburg pulled away in the second quarter as Lemont went ice cold from beyond the 3-point line.

The Indians missed all six 3-point attempts in the second quarter while committing four turnovers.

"Going into the game, we wanted to go full court and pressure them a little bit," Sandburg coach Todd Allen said. "We thought our athleticism would cause some turnovers for us. With this group, we like to get up and down the floor a little bit, and defensively we were pretty solid."

Joe Motto opened the second half with a 3-pointer and Dvorak followed with a baseline jumper as Lemont's shots started to fall.

Unfortunately for the Indians, Sandburg's long-distance shots started to drop.

Demogerontas hit a three and guard Fahad Nazir followed with two long-range bombs as the Eagles went up 50-27 after three quarters.

With the Plainfield North loss behind them, the Eagles can move on.

"(Last week) we played a good Plainfield North team that was 21-6 and returned all five starters," Allen said. "Tonight we kept our poise a little bit better. We got a couple stops when we needed them and we made some shots. It always helps when the ball goes in."
