A matchup of two talented and ranked teams turned into a rout Friday evening as No. 6 Joliet Catholic lambasted host No. 5 Lockport 20-4 in five innings.
Joliet Catholic banged out 18 hits in avenging a 2-1 loss to Lockport (12-2) in the title game of the WJOL Tournament last month. The Hilltoppers' win also ends the Porters' 10-game winning streak.
"Since we lost that game earlier we came out really motivated," Joliet Catholic second baseman Nick Ratajczak said. "Hopefully, we'll keep playing this way. If we hit the ball like this it will be a good rest of the season."
Ratajczak was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Steve Cservenyak went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run homer that capped a 10-run third inning.
Nate Minarich and Mike Nelson also had three hits for Joliet Catholic (9-3). Dave Cladis added two hits and three RBI for the Hilltoppers, who batted around twice -including scoring six in the fifth.
Steve Sabatino was 2-for-3 with a two run home runs and Mike Frigo added two hits and two RBIs for the Porters, who had seven hits.
Both teams didn't use their top pitchers because of conference games.
"Whether or not we were throwing our No.1 or our No. 7, 8 and 9, Joliet Catholic still swung the bats tonight," Lockport coach Steve Stanicek said. "This obviously isn't the result we wanted, but we still didn't take a step backward."
