Lincoln-Way East was coming off an inconsistent stretch in which the Griffins upended then-No. 1 Brother Rice and Mount Carmel, only to turn around and drop their next two games.
Which team would show up Wednesday against Stagg?
The Griffins (6-3, 1-1 SWSC Blue) provided the answer in the first inning when they erupted for five runs on their way to a 12-0, five-inning victory in a Southwest Suburban crossover game in Frankfort.
"It felt good after those two losses to jump out to a big lead in the first inning,” said Michigan-bound shortstop John Lorenz, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and a two-run single in the Griffins’ five-run fourth inning.
"Today we just wanted to come back and get back to the same baseball we played when we beat [Brother Rice and Mount Carmel]."
The first-inning outburst was plenty for senior left-hander Josh Folgers (2-0), who tossed a two-hitter -– both infield singles –- struck out five and walked one.
"It always feels good going out there with a big lead," said Folgers. "Once we got that 5-0 lead I was able to just relax and pitch."
Joe Turek hit a three-run homer in the fourth and finished 2-for-2 with two runs. Cody Erikson’s triple and Lloyd Burchett’s single each drove in two runs in the first inning.
Stagg dropped to 7-3, 0-2 in the SWSC Red.
