Two dropped balls allowing runners to score from third base proved to be the difference as No. 9 Batavia upended Wheaton North 6-4 Saturday in the Class 4A St. Charles North Sectional championship.
Henry DuQue also smashed a key two-run home run to trigger Batavia’s victory.
Wheaton North (28-6) scored a run in the first inning on a dropped ball, allowing pitcher Jack DeAno to score.
DuQue’s two-run shot came in the top of the second giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Batavia added a run on a single by Joe Aguilar (2-for-3, RBI) in the third.
The Bulldogs (30-6) kept the pressure on with another run in the fifth on a pitch that got away from Wheaton North catcher Jack Quinn extending their advantage to 4-1.
The Falcons rallied with three runs, capped off by a DeAno solo homer, to knot the game at 4-4.
Batavia’s Joe Scaccia scored from third base on another ball that got away from Quinn giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead. An error by Wheaton North first baseman Jeff Schalk allowed Adam Karger to score from third base for final tally in a 6-4 final.
“In past years if someone had gotten a two-run homer off of me, I wouldn’t be able to recover,” said Batavia pitcher Brian Krolikowski, who struck out seven. “Coach [Matt] Holm has helped me get past something like that this year.”
