Steve Mazzone and Gordie Campbell are the last two hitters in New Trier’s batting order, but they are certainly not easy outs.
The duo combined to drive in the Trevians’ first six runs as New Trier rolled to a 12-3 victory over Loyola in the Class 4A Glenbrook South Sectional championship.
“There are no weak spots in this lineup,” Mazzone said. “We just went out there trying to help the team.”
After the Ramblers (23-13) took a 1-0 lead, Campbell stroked a two-run single to right in the bottom of the second to give the Trevians (28-7) a lead they would never relinquish.
With the bases loaded in the third, Mazzone stepped to the plate and crushed a bases-clearing double to right. Campbell followed with an RBI double and the rout was on.
“We have a really deep lineup and any guy can do it for us,” Campbell said. “(Loyola pitcher Jack) Havey is a great pitcher and he throws hard so when you get a bat on his pitch it’s gonna go far.”
Havey took the loss, throwing 126 pitches in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and eight walks.
New Trier starting pitcher Ryder Borre picked up the win, going three innings while surrendering three hits and six walks.
Offensively, Loyola was led by Luke Lopatka, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
New Trier leadoff hitter Jonathon Hall had a solid day going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, two walks, a double and a triple. Jake Carrow added a home run while Tim Duxbury and Bob Cook contributed an RBI each.
“We played with a lot of Loyola guys growing up so this feel really good,” Mazzone said. “We were really looking forward to this game.”
