Fremd scored four runs in the fourth inning and chased starting pitcher Zach Mink with another two runs in the third inning as the seventh-seeded Vikings beat 10th-seeded Glenbrook North in their playoff opener Thursday.
All six of Fremd's runs came with two outs in a 6-3 victory in the Class 4A Fremd Regional semifinal. Fremd (20-10), coming off its 5-0 loss to Rolling Meadows May 23 in the MSL championship game, put together four consecutive hits off Mink (4-4) with two outs in the second. Zenon Kolakowski's single to right scored two runs and then the fourth run of the inning scored on an error.
Matt Johnsen earned the win with an eight-hit complete game. The Spartans (17-11) scored twice in the top of the seventh, but could not recover after Johnsen limited GBN to only one hit in the first four innings.
"I've played football and wrestled too, but you can't be prepared for the end (of the season)," GBN senior center fielder Jon Cornfield said. "Life goes on."
GBN lead-off hitter Adam Robinson went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Fremd advanced to play Stevenson in the regional final Saturday. Fremd's Joey Depaolis went 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Chris Doloughty went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
