Jon Carlson pitched a shutout as Rolling Meadows defeated Fremd 5-0 Saturday for the Mid-Suburban League title.
The Kentucky-bound senior scattered eight hits while walking three and striking out nine.
“My philosophy today was to try and not walk as many guys and just try to throw strikes,’’ Carlson said. “I still walked a few guys, but overall I did pretty good.’’
The Mustangs (18-13) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Carlson (1-for-4) hit into a double play with the bases loaded that plated Dan Wenzel (0-for-2, run).
Meadows made it 4-0 in the fifth after consecutive two-out RBI singles by Pat Conlin (2-for-3, run, two RBI), Kyle Krzeski (2-for-4, RBI) and Ben Kamperschroer (2-for-3, RBI) that chased starter Matt Johnson (6-2) of Fremd (19-10). Conlin added another RBI single in the sixth to make it 5-0.
“Jon on the mound and some key hitting by the lower half of our lineup enabled us to come through,’’ said Meadows coach Jim Lindeman.
Carlson (7-1) finished the regular season with a 1.78 ERA, 116 strikeouts and 31 walks in 67 innings.
