Having missed most of his junior season with an injury, senior Tanner Witt was forced to watch in street clothes as his Lake Zurich teammates won the North Suburban Conference championship.
On Thursday, Witt was leading the way as Lake Zurich claimed its second straight North Suburban Conference title by handling Lakes 8-1 at Lake Zurich.
The multi-talented Witt carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowed one run, five hits and struck out seven in six innings. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with a home run.
"It's good to come out here and be the best when everyone expected us not to be," said Witt. "No one thought we'd be here, so it's a good feeling."
The Bears (22-9) clubbed four home runs against Lakes (20-11), which won the Prairie Division for the first time in the school's four-year existence.
Senior Ricky Erickson hit two homers and drove in three, and sophomore Parker Asmann delivered a two-run homer in the second to give the Prairie Division champ Bears a 4-0 lead.
