Luke Mottashed hit a pair of two-run homers to power Cary-Grove to a 9-6 victory Monday over visiting Crystal Lake South in Fox Valley Conference game in Cary.
Both of Mottashed's blasts came at opportune times. Crystal Lake South (19-11, 7-5 in Valley Division) jumped to a quick 2-0 lead to open the game thanks to Ian Gardeck's two-run homer. But Mottashed swiftly responded with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
Then, after Crystal Lake South had chiseled the deficit to 7-6, the left-handed hitting catcher launched a towering blast to right field in the sixth to secure the Trojans' 10th win in 11 games for the Trojans (23-7-1, 10-2).
"It felt good," said Mottashed," who's signed at Heartland Community College. "I've really been focusing on seeing the ball deep and taking it opposite field."
Mark Thomson hit a homer to lead off the fourth, Chris Waylock doubled, scored twice and drove in a run, and leadoff man Eric Chandler scored three runs for the Trojans. Matt Nelson (9-0) allowed eight hits and five runs in five innings to earn the win.
Gardeck paced the Gators with three hits, including a homer, a two-run double and four RBI, and Alex MacAulay went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.
