South Elgin prevailed 4-3 over Upstate Eight Conference foe Lake Park on Tuesday after a bases-loaded, two-out error sent home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
It had appeared as though the Storm (10-9-1, 7-5-1) would strand the bases loaded for the second time in the game before Ben Irving’s flare to right ricocheted off the glove of right fielder Garrett Gajewski and hit the grass — sending Drew Buddle (2-for-3) in to score for the second time in the game.
“One of these fell our way finally,” South Elgin coach Jim Kating said. “We’ve lost a few of one-run ballgames where we feel like we played good enough to win, but the breaks just didn’t go our way. It’s nice to have one go our way.”
Sam Jordt (4-2) earned the win, tossing a four-hitter while allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits, three walks and a hit batter. Jordt’s best moment came in the fifth when he got out of a second-and-third, none-out jam.
“I had the plan to get the first two, walk the next guy and then get the fourth guy and it worked out,” said Jordt, who struck out four.
Brandon Stevens (2-for-3, 2 runs), Buddle and Kyle Kinyon (3-for-4, double, three RBI) led the Storm attack from the top of the order.
Lake Park drops to 4-16 and 3-10 in the UEC.
