Cooper Rushing delivered in the clutch Monday for the second consecutive game for Glenbrook North.
The junior third baseman drove in the go-ahead run when his eighth-inning single to left field brought across courtesy runner Cole Philips in a 3-1 CSL North victory at Maine West.
Rushing scored an insurance after he stole second and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Justin Johann. Rushing scored on another error when left fielder Nick Solka misplayed a line drive.
Philips scored after coming in for catcher Keith Brand, who led off the eighth with a triple when center fielder Tommy Ross lost sight of the ball.
"I'm just trying to hit behind Keith Brand," Rushing said. "I hit a grand slam Saturday against Waukegan."
The Spartans (11-6, 4-3) received a boost from pitcher Steven Phillips' starting debut. The right-handed senior allowed only one hit through 5 2/3 innings, a dribbler up the middle by Connor Skoczynski in the sixth inning. Skoczynski later scored on a throwing error by Brand.
Reliever Scott Sutton earned the win after allowing one hit in 2 1/3 innings. Josh Wright suffered the loss in relief of Nate Anderson. Maine West (14-5) lost for the second consecutive time.
