Simeon’s Karon Kamel struck out eight in a two-hitter as the Wolverines silenced host Harlan 12-0 in five innings Wednesday on Jackie Robinson day.
‘‘I hit my spots,’’ Kamel said. ‘‘They couldn’t catch my fastball and I mixed in some offspeed pitches.’’
Jackie Robinson Day was special for veteran Simeon coach Leroy Franklin, who met the legend when he was 12 years old at Pelican Stadium in New Orleans.
‘‘To me Jackie Robinson was the best baseball player, ever,’’ said Franklin, a New Orleans native. ‘‘It’s definitely a significant day not just because of what he did on the field. He told me, ‘Little man, you really know how to play the game.’ That made my whole day. I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life.’’
In the top of the third, Charles Aldridge (2-for-3) hit a RBI triple into left center and scored on John Dorsey’s sacrifice fly. Blake Hickman (2-for-3) added a solo homer for the Wolverines (8-4, 1-0 Jackie Robinson South).
Simeon scored eight runs in the fifth. Elliott Muhammed hit a bases-loaded single, and Christian Hickman followed with a two-run single to center. Quincy Collins (1-for-2) and leadoff man Quentin Richardson’s (3-for-3) also contributed for Simeon.
Kyle Johnson hit a single and Donavan Norris doubled to account for both hits for Harlan (8-5, 0-1).
