Senior pitcher Alyssa Thompson overcame a shaky start Tuesday to lead Marist to one of its biggest wins of the season -- a 5-4 victory over No. 6 Lockport in a nonconference clash.

After surrendering five hits in the first two innings, Thompson limited Lockport (21-5) to two hits the rest of the way.

"They're a big-hitting team," said Thompson, who improved to 14-3 and finished with four strikeouts. "At first, when they started hitting my pitches, I was pretty nervous. But then I settled down, hit the corners and the defense made the plays."

The RedHawks (18-8) scored its runs early in the game. Maura Harrington had a two-out, two-run single in the first. Rose Poland (2-for-3) and Rikki Alcaraz drove in runs in the second, and Ashley Nowdomski (2-for-3) added an RBI single in the third.

Thompson helped her own cause with a pair of singles as Marist recorded eight of its nine hits in the first three innings.

"This is huge," Marist coach Denise Fasano said. "After (Monday's 3-0 loss to Bishop McNamara) the girls came back and gave 110 percent. It's exciting and reassuring that we bounced back."

Despite some good scoring chances, the Porters were unable to catch up to Marist. Samantha Stanicek had an RBI double in the first. Courtney Kutsulis (3-for-3) and Cassie Walisiak had RBI hits in the second and Brittaney Gonsoulin had a sacrifice fly to plate an unearned run in the third for Lockport, which had won six straight and 15 of their last 17 games.

Marist turned two double plays to end the second and sixth innings and Thompson retired the side on four pitches in the seventh.

"After the loss against Bishop McNamara we came together as a team," Thompson said. "This shows if we come together we can beat an amazing team like Lockport."
