Ka-Boehm: Trevians stun No. 5 Wildkits
There was a noticeable difference midway through the fourth quarter of New Trier’s 58-55 win over No. 5 Evanston on Friday at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Peter Boehm started screaming.
‘‘Screaming is not usually my thing,’’ Boehm said. ‘‘But I figure there are only a couple of games left. I tried to show some leadership. It’s easy with these guys. They all played with a lot of heart.’’
The No. 20 Trevians took control with an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter.
Zach Morton’s three with 31 seconds to play cut the lead to four, but that was as close as the Wildkits would get until Jeremy McCray’s basket at the buzzer accounted for the final score.
New Trier was supposed to have troubles finding a ballhandler this season. Boehm, a 6-9 senior, has stepped into that role as a point-forward.
‘‘[Coach Rick Malnati] designated me the primary ball-advancer,’’ Boehm said. ‘‘It works. I guess he was right about something.’’
Sophomore Alex Rossi led the Trevians (17-6, 7-3 Central Suburban South) with 15 points. Boehm had 12 points and seven rebounds. Tim McCrary contributed 12 points.
Morton scored 15 for Evanston (23-3, 9-1). Travis Clark added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Stephen Rudnicki had 10 points.
The Wildkits had won the last three matchups against New Trier.
The Trevians didn’t score a field goal in the final 3:58, but made 8 of 12 from the line to close out the win.
“Evanston is the top seed in the sectional,” Boehm said. “It’s big to know that if we need to beat them again, we can.”
