Resurrection was like the girl in the movie “27 Dresses”: always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Until Saturday.

Behind a balanced attack, Resurrection captured its first GCAC Red title since 1977 by rallying for a 50-48 victory over host Trinity.

Since 1993, the No. 22 Bandits (20-6) have finished second in the tournament eight times, including a loss to No. 19 Trinity (22-6) in the title game last year.

‘‘Resurrection has been in the championship game for many years and hasn’t been able to take it,’’ Bandits senior forward Lisa Gariti said. ‘‘But tonight we had five seniors out on the floor that wanted it.’’

Gariti nailed a three-pointer with 2:24 to play to give Resurrection a 43-41 lead. Trinity tied the game at 43-43 on two free throws by Caneka Davis with 1:40 remaining.

But the Bandits wouldn’t be denied as Becky Sweeney put them ahead to stay at 45-43 on a layup with 42 seconds left.

‘‘Hannah Hartman made an awesome pass inside and I was able to put it in,’’ Sweeney said. ‘‘We had lost to them [69-48 on December 1, 2007] in the regular-season meeting here, so it was a great thing to be able to come back here and win.’’

Gariti, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, hit two free throws with 10.7 seconds left to give Resurrection a 49-46 lead. Hartman clinched it on a free throw that give the Bandits a four-point advantage with 2.4 seconds to play.

Deanna Oritz led Resurrection with 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sweeney finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Monica Albano led Trinity with 18 points, but was held scoreless in the final 12:33 of the game. Amanda Macchione had 11 points and Shakyia Vassar added eight points for the Blazers.

The score was tied at 13 after one quarter and at 26 at the half.
