York used timely surges in the second and third quarters to build up enough of a lead over Neuqua Valley in Friday's Hinsdale South Girls Basketball Tip-Off Tournament game. Then the Dukes made just enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for a tight 44-37 victory over the Wildcats in Darien.

Senior forward Evan Semmelhack finished with a game-high 14 points. She sank two of her three 3-pointers to power a 8-0 third-quarter run to give York its biggest lead of the night, 34-20. Guards Danielle Vujovic and Meryl Cripe each contributed 7 points for the Dukes who improved their season record to 4-1.

It was Vujovic, a junior, who came through in the clutch by sinking five free throws in the fourth quarter, including three in the final 28 seconds of the contest after Neuqua Valley pulled within 40-37.

The Wildcats (0-4) were led by 9 points by guard Jenna Marsalli. They were hurt by a cold shooting second quarter, 1-for-13 from the field, and York took advantage by outscoring them 13-3 in that eight-minute stretch.

St. Joseph's girls basketball team concluded the Willowbrook Thanksgiving Tournament on a solid note by topping St. Francis 59-36 Friday night in Villa Park.

Though the Chargers went just 3-2 at the tournament, they did so without Octavia Brown, one of their more skilled guards who missed time with an ankle injury. The Chargers (3-3) got contributions from elsewhere in this contest, though, getting a game-high 18 points from Ashley Tolbert. Brown also added 13 points in limited duty while trying to not overdo it with the injury.

The key point in the game was the third quarter, where the Chargers outscored St. Francis 17-5 to turn a 31-25 halftime lead into a 48-30 advantage entering the final frame.
