Proviso West senior post Paul Howard converted a short field goal with four seconds remaining to left the Panthers over St. Joseph 49-48 Friday night in St. Charles.

The Chargers (1-2) suffered their second loss at the St. Charles East Thanksgiving tournament and will play the hosts in the seventh-place game on Ssturday afternoon.

The Chargers struggled mightily from the field, converting 16-for-49 attempts, but DeAndre McCamey split two free throws to give the squad its last lead with 1:08 to play.

St. Joseph had a stop on the Panthers' ensuing possession, only to have a critical miscommunication provide Proviso West (1-2) new life.

Howard had the last of 15 lead changes off Ryan Woods' dribble penetration, and a last-gasp shot at the buzzer failed.

Curtis Gates' 15 points paced St. Joseph, which was held to single-digit outputs in the second and fourth quarters. Tyrone McDonald and Howard led Proviso West with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
