Remembering Ben

Comcast SportsNet will premiere its documentary ‘‘‘25’ The Ben Wilson Story’’ to more than 400 students at Simeon this morning at 10:30. The program will be shown on Comcast SportsNet tonight at 7. Today marks 25 years to the date that Simeon basketball star Ben Wilson was shot and killed. He was walking near the school with his girlfriend when he was approached by two young men. Words were exchanged, and Ben was shot; he died the next morning at St. Bernard Hospital. There also will be a 30-minute special that includes interviews with Wilson’s teammates and starters on Simeon’s 1984 state-championship team — Bobby Tribble, Tim Bankston, Rodney Hull and Kenny Allen — and former Simeon stars Nick Anderson and Derrick Rose, who wore No. 25 as a tribute to Wilson.

Semis live

The Class 7A semifinal game featuring Glenbard West at Lake Zurich will be telecast live on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet. The Class 8A semifinal with Marist at Glenbard North will be shown live Saturday night at 7 on WPWR (Ch. 50).

Off to San Antonio

Joe Damisch, Mike Garrity and Tyler Juckett of Buffalo Grove will be participating in the U.S. Army National Combine on Jan. 7-9, 2010, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Also participating will be Fremd’s Jack Konopka, Brian Bobek and Justin Wallace.

Matt’s going, too

Matthew Brocious, an eighth-grader from Wheaton, has been selected to play in the 2010 Football University Youth All-American Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in San Antonio.

Collective effort

Why is Maine South’s 43 points-per-game offense so effective? Coach Dave Inserra credits the offensive line, which features a collective effort rather than individual stars. Twin brothers Mike (6-2, 216) and Alex (6-3, 226) Cichowski, nephews of former New Trier coach Chick Cichowski, are on the left side and juniors Victor Nelson (6-7, 305) and Frank Colletti (6-3, 245) are on the right side. Inserra predicts that Nelson and Colletti will be All-Staters next year.
