All-purpose back JT Mesch scored three touchdowns to lead Glenbard West to a 27-14 victory over Hononegah as the Hilltoppers scored all their points in the opening half to defeat the host Indians in a second round Class 7A playoff game.
Mesch staked Glenbard West (11-0) to a 14-0 first quarter advantage with touchdown receptions of 32 and 16 yards from quarterback Tyler Warden (8-14, 143 yards).
Jack Marsten’s 40-yard interception touchdown return extended their lead to 21-0. Mesch ended their scoring with a 16-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of the second quarter.
“The second line let a couple across at the end, so they’ll have to work on that,” Mesch said. “Sometimes we ease up at the end and that’s going to hurt us down the road.”
Glenbard West’s defense took over in the second half, collecting two interceptions and one fumble to stymie Hononegah (9-2).
Tommy Schutt registered two of Glenbard West’s three sacks of Hononegah QB Chase Robinson (9-16, 75 yards, 2 INT) to preserve the win in the fourth quarter.
Mesch had four receptions for 58 yards. He added 21 yards on four carries. The Hilltoppers massed 230 yards on 40 carries.
