Mustangs' Carlson stymies Conant

Both Jon Carlson and Walter Wijas are University of Kentucky recruits, and they both pitch in the Mid-Suburban League. Yet the two aces only know the other by his reputation.

On Monday, the two future teammates got better acquainted with each other when they squared off in a Mid-Suburban League crossover game between divisional leaders. With a handful of pro scouts and a Kentucky coach on hand, Carlson and Rolling Meadows received little resistance in defeating host Conant 10-1.

“I was real pumped up for this one,” said Carlson, who improved to 5-0. “I really wanted this game.”

And it showed. The 6-foot-4 left-hander allowed no earned runs in a four-hit complete game, as he struck out 13 and walked four. Carlson, who also had two hits at the plate, struck out the side in the fourth and seventh innings.

Rolling Meadows’ offense provided Carlson plenty of wiggle room against Wijas (4-3). The Mustangs (12-10, 8-1 in the MSL East) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after pushing four runs across in the third inning.

Dan Lauria delivered the big blow with a two-run double and Kyle Winkler laid down a perfectly placed suicide squeeze that turned into a hit.

“We thought it was going to be close, but we just came out and hit the ball hard,” said Lauria, a senior second baseman who went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Dan Lynch had a double and scored three runs for Rolling Meadows, and Dan Wenzel went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Joe Belmonte led Conant (13-7, 5-3 in MSL West) with two hits.
