Lake Forest heated up early and Matt Vogrich stoked the fire late as Lake Forest burned No. 9 Zion Benton 73-62 Wednesday night in Zion.
"We run a great offense for shooters," said Vogrich, who finished with 35 points with three of his five treys coming in the fourth quarter.
"We have a lot of shooters on our team so it works."
The Scouts (10-3, 4-1 North Suburban Lake) hit eight of their first 10 shots including 5-of-6 from outside the arc as they raced to a 21-5 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter.
Zion-Benton (10-4, 4-2) then turned up the defensive pressure and slowly cut in the Scouts' lead. The Zee-Bees finally got over the top and 55-52 with 6:23 to play on a three by Ronald Stewart (23 points).
The game was tied at 57 with 5:21 to play when Vogrich took over. He scored the next eight points of the game, including with a pair of threes. Meanwhile, Zion-Benton went scoreless for over four minutes as the Scouts pulled away.
"Our kids did an unbelievable job of knowing their responsibilities," Lake Forest coach Phil LaScala said. "It sort of helps when Matt [Vogrich] goes off and scores 35."
Mitch Hopfinger had 12 points and nine rebounds for Lake Forest. Teammate Kevin Berardini also had 12 points and Tommy Rees scored nine on three first-quarter treys.
Markus Yarbrough added 13 points and nine rebounds for Zion-Benton.
