Illinois football coach Ron Zook has scored a major recruiting coup by landing an oral commitment from 6-5, 265-pound senior Craig Drummond of Morgan Park, one of the top-rated defensive ends in the country, the Sun-Times has learned. He chose Illinois over Wisconsin.

Drummond, who was named to the Sun-Times’ All-Chicago Area and All-State teams as a junior, hasn’t played this season because of a foot injury.

Morgan Park coach Lexie Spurlock said Drummond is the best defensive end he has produced in 14 years. Last season, he was credited with 22 sacks.

‘‘When he is healthy, he is the best pass rusher in the Midwest,’’ recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. ‘‘He is a high school version of [former Bears star] Richard Dent. He was dominating as a junior.’’
